Seend face Potterne, bidding for League & Cup treble

With the Division Two winner’s trophy and the A&B Cup safely locked away in their trophy cabinet, Seend United FC arrive at the Gooding Accounts Stadium, Meadow Lane, Westbury on Tuesday evening looking to claim a League and Cup treble.

Standing in their way of lifting the Chantry Digital sponsored Knockout Cup  and a third piece of silverware are Second division stable mates Potterne FC who will have to conjure up something special if they are going to deny Adam Potter and Jake Sainsbury’s side a fourth victory over them this term.

Seend romped Division two title earlier this season, however their cup final opponents were worthy runners up, a 2-1 success in September followed by a thumping 6-2 victory in October over Ashley Huntley’s side were seen as key wins on their way to Seend wrapping up the number one spot.

Added to their two league defeats was an A&B Cup semi-final defeat for Potterne so it would be fair to say that they will be underdogs when the teams go head-to-head at Meadow Lane, however having claimed the scalps of three first division teams in getting to the final they shouldn’t be written off.

Potterne’s route to the final began with a first round bye, they then kicked off their cup campaign with a 2-1 victory away at Marshfield, Andy Rossiter scoring both goals.

Another away day followed, a trip to Freshford United FC saw them claim their place in the semi-finals, courtesy of a 4-1 win, Wayne House netted twice with a goal each for Darren Lewis and Andy Rossiter making up the quartet.

Standing in the way of a cup final appearance were Heytesbury who were in fine form ahead of their semi-final tie, but had no answer to a rampant Potterne side who turned the form book on its head by beating their first division opposition 7-2.  Ash Huntley scored inside 4 minutes, Wayne House made it 2-0 on 8 minutes before Lee Sanders hit a great strike from the edge of the area to make for 3-0.

A second from House made it 4-0 and although Heytesbury scored the next 2 goals, they were little more than consolations as House topped off an excellent performance to score a fifth for the Division Two side to complete his hat-trick.  A late Matt Tilley double wrapped up what was an excellent win for Huntley’s team.

Seend United who netted 23 goals and conceded just once all against First Division opposition on their way to the final, got their cup campaign underway with an 8-0 victory away at Warminster Town Reserves, Tom Rooney top scored with a 4 timer, Matt Purdy helped himself to a hat trick while Jack Booth’s lone effort made up the 8.

Staverton Rangers, although from Division one, were no match for Seend who routed them 12-0, Jake Sainsbury, Ben Ryder and Matt Purdy scored 2-each, Jack Booth, Paul Gittins, Simon Parfitt, Adam Potter, Mark Reynolds and Nick Mead shared the others.

Next up were near neighbours Melksham Town Development who they had beaten 5-1 in the A&B Cup, things were a lot closer this time around as goals for Will Purdy and substitute Ben Ryder earned Seend a 2-1 win.

A mouth-watering semi-final meeting with Westbury United Reserves, saw them concede for the first time in the competition, but Max Bishop’s goal was just a consolation, Matt Purdy with two and Paul Gittins firing Seend to their second final of what has been an incredible season for a team who almost called it a day after the previous season was curtailed early due to Covid19.

Seend United will be firm favourites to lift the Knockout Cup, however they will face a tough challenge from a Potterne side, looking to break the hoodoo Adam Potter and Jake Sainsbury’s side appear to have over them.

If both teams are up for it, the final has the makings of being a classic and we could be treated to a goal fest.
