DIVISION TWO ROUND UP – Week 11

South Newton & Barford Hornets FC 0 Calne Athletic FC 5

With Gooding Accounts sponsored Trowbridge League Division Two, leaders Durrington FC receiving the 3 points from their scheduled match at home to Staverton Rangers due to Rangers being unable to raise a team, second in the table Calne Athletic FC knew that a high scoring victory away at South Newton & Barford Hornets was needed if they were to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.

Second place Calne Athletic were looking to keep pace with league leaders Durrington as made the long trip to Bishopdown after being given the all clear that the pitch was fit to see them face bottom of the table South Newton & Barford.

Calne took an early lead when Archie Green scored the opener from close range.

The South Newton game plan was to frustrated for as long as possible and the sodden pitch was not allowing for any free-flowing football to take place.

The next real opening saw Green again through on goal but this time he drew a smart save from Craig Rowland down low to his left.

The second goal came with 30 minutes on the clock when Cody Haines was one on one and he slotted home despite a touch from Rowland.

The third followed shortly after when a looping cleared header saw the current top marksman of TDFL Division 1, Ewan McConnachie launch an effort with his back to goal which caught Rowland completely off guard and nestled into the back of the net for a 3-goal cushion at halftime.

However, the goal of the game came just after the break. Green finding himself out on the right and he managed to arrow a thunderbolt right into the top left-hand corner.

Max Salf was rarely troubled in the Calne goal and despite much probing the final goal did not arrive until the final few minutes when Izo Basaran scored the fifth and final goal from close range.

Bishops Cannings Reserves FC 3 Trowbridge Wanderers FC 3

When Trowbridge Wanderers FC and Bishops Cannings Reserves FC met on the opening day of the season it was Wanderers who came out on top as they claimed a 3-1 win. The reverse fixture saw Wanderers score another 3 goals, but Cannings matched them as they battled to a 3-3 draw in a match that they actually led twice.

Lewis Hawkins after being set up by Alex Parrish gave Bishops Cannings a 14th minute lead. Wanderers were level just 2 minutes later, Adam Cooke scoring from a Ryan Stewart assist and that was how it remained until half time.

After the break Wanderers took the lead via Neil Grant’s 47th minute penalty.

Callum Garbutt restored parity of Cannings in the 66th minutes and they took the lead on 74 minutes thanks to a second of the afternoon from Alex Parrish.

Almost immediately Wanderers fashioned an equaliser, Lewis Balkwill netting from a Jack Thomkins assist assist to level matters at 3-3 in the 75th minute.

Both teams had further chances and both could and probably should have won it, but after 90 minutes, a draw was probably the right result for both teams.

Pilot FC 2 Freshford United Reserves FC 4

After suffering defeat in their opening six league matches, Freshford United Reserves FC look as if they have finally found the winning formula. A 4-2 victory away at Pilot FC was the third win on the spin and comes on the back of an excellent 2-0 triumph over Bromham last weekend.

Last week it was Alfie and Edmund Little who stole the headlines, this week it was their dad Mike Little who got one over his boys as his double saw his team to victory.

Will Heron opened the scoring for Freshford on 7 minutes, Mike Little made it 2-0 in the 19th minute and Alfie Little’s goal after 30 minutes put them 3-0 up. A second from Mike Little in the 41st minute gave the villagers a 4-0 half time lead.

To Pilot’s credit they can claim to have won the second 45 minutes as they managed to keep Freshford out, while scoring two goals of their own, Charlie Rutherford and Adam Meakin from a Charlie Jackson assist getting on the score sheet, but their goals were little more than consolations as Freshford first half performance won them the points.

Durrington FC v Staverton Rangers FC H/W

Not that they would have wanted too, but through no fault of their own, Division Two leaders Durrington FC who would have been expected to beat Staverton Rangers FC had a rare Saturday off, but still picked up 3 points when their scheduled opposition were unable to raise a team for their trip to Salisbury.

For Durrington who remain top of the table with a perfect record of 9 wins and 27 points, they are looking odds on favourites to pick up the title at some point in the New Year.
