LAST GASP GOAL ENDS GREYHOUND’S TITLE HOPES
Hilperton Greyhound FC went into their penultimate game of the season, needing to beat Trowbridge Town Tigers FC to keep alive their chances of taking the Gooding Accounts Ltd sponsored-Trowbridge & District Football League, Second Division title ahead of Freshford United.
After overturning a two goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead late into their game at Whaddon Lane, Hilperton Greyhound conceded a late equaliser that saw their title dreams come an end.
Jamie Ford had given Trowbridge Tigers the lead and when Connor Wase put through his own net to double the Tigers advantage, Greyhound faced an uphill to get their title hopes back on track.
The Tiger’s keeper Ryan Hodge and his defence that had been solid to keep out everything that Greyhound threw at them were finally beaten Josh Propert found a way through to halve the arrears and on the stroke of half time Greyhound were on level terms, Arthur Dolan crashing home a free kick to make it 2-2.
The second period started as the first had finished with Greyhound on top, but again finding it had to breakthrough the Tiger’s organised defence, they finally edged in front when a second from Dolan put them 3-2 up with less than 10 minutes remaining.
From a position of despair to now being in charge of things, Greyhound just had to see out the final few minutes to take the race for the title to the final day of the season, but with virtually the final kick of the match Trowbridge Town Tigers popped up with an equaliser, Ben Dyckes being the toast of both the visitors and Freshford United as his last gasp goal had handed the later the title, in what was a thrilling end to a campaign that only a few months ago, Freshford were nailed on certainties to win, that was before a run of poor results saw them give hope to Greyhound who will now have to settle for a second place finish.
